The underlying AI model that reads and writes text, trained on a very large amount of writing. It is the engine inside assistants and agents. Claude, GPT and Gemini are large language models.
Why it matters for your business
You will not build one, but you will choose one, through the tools you buy or have built. Models differ in cost, speed, how much they can read at once and how carefully they follow instructions. The right one depends on the job.
In practice
A law firm's intake assistant uses a fast model for quick first replies and a more careful one for summarizing long documents, because the tradeoffs are different for each task.
